Hollywood producer Willie Bauche is so obsessed with turning his wife and actress Ann Garantier into the sexiest Hollywood star that he neglects her real needs. Ann gets frustrated, feeling that he cares more for her as a vehicle for his writing and directing than as a flesh-and-blood French woman. As they go to the French Riviera to prepare their next movie, Ann is charmed by good-looking pilot Marco Ranieri she met during the Nice Carnival celebrations.

The story of a washed-up German circus clown named Helmut Doork during the beginning of World War II and the Holocaust. Although he was once a famous performer who toured North America and Europe with the Ringling Brothers, Doork is now past his prime and receives little respect. After Doork causes an accident during a show, the head clown convinces the circus owner to demote Doork. Upon returning home, Doork confides his problems to his wife Ada, and she encourages him to stand up for himself.

Here Fellini presents a portrait that goes against the traditional notion of Casanova as an enlightened gadabout. A stark look at the man’s loneliness, as the respect for which he yearns is constantly undermined by his more basic urges.
