The film takes place in Sri Lanka. In the story, the Moslem-Buddhist civil war has driven a local boy to hide out in a traveling circus which his white mother helps run. The fantastic nature of this story is borne out by the condition of the boy's mother, who survived the Nazi death camps and yet, in the 1980s, looks like a young woman. Despite the fragile refuge offered by the circus, the civil war begins to affect the performers’ lives.

Author, poet and playwright Marcel Spadice is fascinated by the circus which is a source of inspiration for him. With the help of his friend Hélène Lagache, he manages to seduce ring-attendant Franz-Ali Aoussine, who dreams of becoming a tightrope star. Marcel takes over the young man's training, imposing a steel-like discipline on him. Franz-Ali submits to the Master's demands, risking his life in the process...

Alma works as a fire-eater and her father as a clown at the Fantasia Circus; she becomes pregnant with his child. When he dies, she works the streets, then joins an itinerant puppet theater which presents Old Testament tales in poor neighborhoods.

Mazeppa is the history of a passion. The exclusive passion which attaches two men to horses. One wears himself out wanting to paint them in movement, it is Théodore Géricault, famous artist of the XIXth century. The other one is proud of dominating them completely, it is Franconi, the rider who manages an itinerant troop of riders and who we call “master”. What gathers these two men is the master’s will to teach Géricault what a horse really is, and Géricault’s yearning to learn.

Reporter Marcos interviews circus equestrian sharpshooter Ana. Afterwards he has dinner with the troupe, spends the night with Ana and falls madly in love. But one night, fate intervenes when three young mechanics brutally rape her. Bruised, humiliated, she becomes obsessed with killing the attackers. Despite himself Marcos is drawn into an endless spiral of violence and death.
