Young pregnant Yanka’s lamentable existence as a circus employee is made a bit more harrowing when a slimy parasite leaps from the body of one of the zoo's leopards and enters her womb. Possessed of an evil intelligence and cranky disposition, the organism transforms her fetus into a snarling little jerk of a monster with a curious interest in human nature and an insatiable thirst for blood.

Author, poet and playwright Marcel Spadice is fascinated by the circus which is a source of inspiration for him. With the help of his friend Hélène Lagache, he manages to seduce ring-attendant Franz-Ali Aoussine, who dreams of becoming a tightrope star. The twin sisters Helena and Irene are born in Helsinki during World War II. A few months later their mother, Sirkka, leaves the girls in the care of their grandmother, an old communist, and runs away with a German soldier. Their life under the protection of their grandmother and the teachings of communism ends first with the death of Stalin, then with that of their grandmother. The girls are eight years old when they are put in an orphanage. Their mother shows up at the orphanage in the company of Ramon, a Spanish trapeze artist. They are on a talent search for a German circus.

The plot centres around knifethrower Gabor and a girl called Adèle, who intends to kill herself by jumping from a bridge. Gabor intervenes to prevent the suicide and persuades Adèle to become the target girl in his knifethrowing act. The film then follows their relationship as they travel around Europe with the act. Their companionship and teamwork mean great luck for both of them. Then they get separated and their lives once again become luckless…
