After a revolution, Princess Olga must flee to Paris, where she meets Prince Michel that she was to marry. Prince Michel, hidden under the identity of Clown Michaelis, goes back to his country and becomes a model king at Olga’s side.

The scientist Paul Beaumont is about to publicly release his research on the origin of mankind, conducted thanks to Baron Regnard. But the Baron steals the papers and takes all credit for the discovery. Publicly humiliated Beaumont starts a new life in a circus where he performs as a clown getting slapped every night before a laughing audience.

Toby Tyler, a little boy, runs away from his abusive uncle and ends up in a circus where he works as a lemonade waiter. Little by little his talent is recognized, and he becomes one of the stars of the circus.

When Polly Fisher gets hurt while performing a trapeze act, she is taken to the nearby house of Reverend John Hartley. As she recuperates they fall in love with each other and get secretly married. But when the news leaks out John’s congregation does not think much of that marriage…

A big-hearted sad clown helps a damsel in distress. Millicent, who believes her fiancé is dead, marries clown Piffle to ensure a protection to her child. Later she realizes that her fiancé is still alive. Heartbroken but happy to have helped the young woman as he could, Piffle will eventually go back to the circus where he used to perform.

A circus owner, Pop Blodgett, closely controls Hope's life and presents her as his prima ballerina. Pop has a plan to make Hope more money for him than just dancing.

A circus dancer named Babette is told by her mother and fortune teller Zaidee that her father is Ezra Butterworth, a respected businessman who left them to get married. Following the death of her mother, Babette decides to go and live with her father. Ezra fears for his reputation, he worries about town gossip about his past scum life and asks Babette to keep quiet. But people start to gossip and Ezra tells all to his wife, who pardons him. Sickened Babette goes back to the circus and his beloved Petey.

Mrs. Wiggs, a loving mother abandoned by her husband, raises her numerous children as best as she can, living in the hope that her husband will return. This family will be crushed by a brutal circus owner as well as many stories — murder attempts and false accusations — until they all eventually regain peace and their honor untouched.
