Universal's top western ace Hoot Gibson enjoyed fine support from another of the studio's sagebrush stars -- cowgirl Josie Sedgwick -- in this average silent oater. He is a college boy from the East who joins a Wild West show, she the man-hating Calamity Jane, victim of a series of practical jokes. Played for laughs despite the participation of veteran bad guy G. Raymond Nye, Sawdust Trail was typical Gibson fare and vastly popular with less-discriminating audiences.

The scientist Paul Beaumont is about to publicly release his research on the origin of mankind, conducted thanks to Baron Regnard. But the Baron steals the papers and takes all credit for the discovery. Publicly humiliated Beaumont starts a new life in a circus where he performs as a clown getting slapped every night before a laughing audience.

Toby Tyler, a little boy, runs away from his abusive uncle and ends up in a circus where he works as a lemonade waiter. Little by little his talent is recognized, and he becomes one of the stars of the circus.

Jimmie, a small-town boy, visits a traveling circus which came to town. He falls in love with Pansy, the daughter of the circus' tightrope walker, after he saves her from a gang of thugs. The circus leaves, though, and Jimmie, also determined to become a tightrope walker, sets up a wire in his backyard to practice. When the circus returns, Jimmie goes and visit them again, but he soon becomes involved in a tragedy involving Pansy's father and a plot to take over the circus by a former employee.

When Polly Fisher gets hurt while performing a trapeze act, she is taken to the nearby house of Reverend John Hartley. As she recuperates they fall in love with each other and get secretly married. But when the news leaks out John’s congregation does not think much of that marriage…

A big-hearted sad clown helps a damsel in distress. Millicent, who believes her fiancé is dead, marries clown Piffle to ensure a protection to her child. Later she realizes that her fiancé is still alive. Heartbroken but happy to have helped the young woman as he could, Piffle will eventually go back to the circus where he used to perform.

Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse go to the circus. They meet a starving dog friend of Krazy’s that would gladly eat a mouse. Panic-stricken Ignatz hides. Krazy calls her a chicken. To prove him wrong Ignatz decides to go and scare a woman in the box seats. Krazy tries to do the same to demonstrate that anybody can do this, but of course the woman faced with a cat is not frightened and shooes him.

A circus owner, Pop Blodgett, closely controls Hope's life and presents her as his prima ballerina. Pop has a plan to make Hope more money for him than just dancing.
